MA in Contemporary Art, London

GUEST SPEAKERS

This programme is especially suited for those who plan careers as gallery owners, curators, dealers, consultants, writers or critics.

The programme starts on 10 September 2008 and applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Scholarships/financial aid and bursaries are available to applicants.

At the root of the MA in Contemporary Art is an emphasis on the artwork itself and how we approach and interpret contemporary art.

Tutor-accompanied visits to international art museums and galleries in London and in continental Europe form a regular part of the curriculum.

The analysis of paintings, sculptures, installations and conceptual works continues throughout the year. Students also curate and propose a hypothetical exhibition using a commercial or public gallery in London as a speculative model.

In Semester One there is an intensive series of lectures by faculty and guest speakers on the development of art from the 1960s to the present, including key themes on both sides of the Atlantic.

In Semester Two, seminar work concentrates on the art network and the relationship of art to criticism, theory and literature.

Week-long study trips to museums, collections and art fairs of Germany, the Netherlands and Italy are also key components in these two semesters.

The course comprises three semesters. The first two are intensively taught. There is no formal tuition in the third semester when students complete their dissertations with regular tutorial supervision.
