MA in East Asian Art, London |
||||||||||||||||
|
This programme focuses on the art history of China, Japan and Korea and is designed for those who wish to become Asian art specialists with a knowledge of auction house, art market, museum and gallery practices. The programme starts on 2 September 2008 and applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Scholarships/financial aid and bursaries are available to applicants. On our MA in East Asian Art, lectures and seminars are organised in three tracks: ritual and religious art, decorative art and pictorial art. Handling sessions and fieldwork include visits to major collections in Europe and a field trip to China. In the second semester, students explore their own special interests, choosing one of three options: 'Trade Art', investigating the importation of styles and ideas into China, along with the export of ceramics and other items manufactured for the markets in South East Asia and Europe, or 'Contemporary Art in Asia (1850-present)', which examines the introduction of Western art into East Asia and the rise of the contemporary art market, and 'Emerging Art Markets' which looks at the Asian art market as one of the major areas of growth in the commercial art world. Handling sessions and fieldwork include visits to major collections in London, a three-day trip to Germany and a studytrip to China. Students with no prior background in Asian art may consider the Foundation Course in Asian Art. The course comprises three semesters. The first two are intensively taught. There is no formal tuition in the third semester when students complete their dissertations with regular tutorial supervision. SEMESTER 1: 2nd September - 12th December, 2008
