| Emerging Markets in the Global Art World |

|
This course offers an overview of contemporary art from emerging markets such as China, Korea, India, the Middle East and elsewhere. By examining the work of relevant artists, visiting galleries that specialize in emerging markets, and speaking with specialists at auction houses and museums, this course examines the dynamic developments in regions that lie beyond what was once neatly defined as "the West." The course considers the impact of the global proliferation of large-scale perennial exhibitions in recent decades, the concomitant rise of new artistic centers, the progressive merging of "mainstream" and "emerging" markets, and theoretical and art historical issues with contemporary art's globalization. Students question what the long-term future of these new markets will be, and where further market developments are likely to transpire. The course is taught by Joe Martin Hill, a specialist in emerging markets who has lectured widely for institutions ranging from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing to UBS in New York. His clients include Sotheby's Auction House (for which he assisted in the development of the New York Pan-Asian Contemporary department), Nokia (for which he commissioned and curated artworks in China), and the Venice Biennale (for which he was on the curatorial team of Robert Storr's 2007 edition). Course dates July 6 – 29, 2010 10:00am – 12:00pm Monday & Wednesday 10:00am – 1:00pm Tuesday & Thursday Location: 570 Lexington Avenue Course fee
