Text, Blogs & Catalogues: Art of the Word

Writing and editing for publications in the visual arts - including brochures, wall texts, blogs and exhibition and auction catalogues - requires very specific skills and an understanding of the marketplace. This course discusses the crucial role of publications in the art world and how they are structured to communicate with different audiences. Students dissect the author/editor relationship, develop their own editing skills, become familiar with common word usage problems, learn how to build style sheets and house styles, and gain greater ease with necessary reference works. The course concludes with a discussion of editorial career paths.

The course is taught by Sotheby’s Institute of Art faculty member, Audrey Walen who is an independent visual art writer, researcher, and art publishing professional. She specializes in all aspects of publishing, with particular expertise in modern and contemporary art. Previously she has served as the Publications Manager for the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and Project Editor with Phaidon Press London. Her writing has appeared in numerous art journals, and she recently contributed to Urban Vinyl (Goliga Books, Tokyo). Current clients include the Fundacion Cisneros, Neue Galerie New York, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
