| Legal Adventures & Misadventures in the Art World |

This course provides an overview of important legal issues and cases in art. We examine the appropriation of images by artists (such as Shepard Fairey, Jeff Koons, and others), protectibility of artistic style, controversial art exhibited in museums, rights of privacy and publicity, freedom of speech, significant disputes concerning museums (Barnes Foundation, Rose Art Museum at Brandeis), restitution by museums of cultural property, restitution of artworks looted during the Nazi era, and disputes and scandals related to auction houses. No legal background is required. The course is taught by Sotheby’s Institute of Art faculty member, Judith B. Prowda, who is an attorney, mediator and arbitrator focused on art law, copyright, entertainment and commercial law. A prominent member of the Bar, she is Chair of the Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, Chair of the Section’s Committee on Fine Arts, and Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Section’s Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution. Her articles have appeared in numerous law reviews and journals and have garnered prestigious awards.
