|
Over the years, Sotheby's has conducted the sales of the most spectacular jewelry collections of all time, and understanding what makes a piece so spectacular is the basis for this course. The course will begin with an introduction to the history of some of the most fabulous jewelry and exceptional private collections in the world. Through lectures and hands-on participation, students will gain an understanding of the finest quality, styles and collectability of all types of fine jewelry from historic diamonds and vintage jewelry to contemporary pieces. Classes will focus primarily on diamonds, colored stones and pearls, and students will learn how to identify different types, recognize true quality, and determine fair pricing. Students will also experience the thrill of handling important, fine jewelry at Sotheby’s auction house, discover the art of loupe-ing jewelry for close inspection, and ultimately become more confident in selecting and buying fine pieces. The course is taught by Robin Wright, an Assistant Vice President and Specialist in Sotheby’s jewelry department. Ms. Wright joined Sotheby’s in 2000 after more than 20 years in the retail jewelry industry throughout the country. She was responsible for helping to organize numerous Arcade and Magnificent Jewels auctions throughout her tenure, and is currently responsible for appraising, organizing and promoting the jewelry sales at Sotheby’s New York. A Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America, Ms. Wright also holds a B.S. in Geology and is a member of the American Society of Jewelry Historians.
