| The Story of America: From Folk Art to Fine Art |
|||||||||
|
This course introduces students to key concepts in American art. Beginning in Colonial times, the course explores American fine and decorative arts though major movements, including the Hudson River School of painting, American Impressionism, Folk Art, Tiffany and the Aesthetic Movement, and the Arts and Crafts movement. In addition to covering the historical and cultural aspects of the objects we examine, the course also focuses on the tools of connoisseurship and the development of an expert eye. As slides are no substitute for examining objects in person, this class combines classroom lectures with collection visits and museum study. This course is led by Jonathan Clancy, Director of the American Fine and Decorative Art Program at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, New York. Dr. Clancy’s writing on the Arts and Crafts movement in America has appeared in journals such as Style 1900, and Journal of Modern Craft. He has written and presented extensively on American Art Pottery and is currently directing a project cataloging the Fine Art collection of the Redwood Library in Newport, Rhode Island. Course dates June 1 – 24, 2010 3:00pm – 5:00pm Monday & Wednesday 3:00pm – 6:00pm Tuesday & Thursday Location: 570 Lexington Avenue Course fee
