Semester Study: Decorative Art and Design

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the decorative arts, in relation to architecture and interiors and the wider cultural context, from c.1685 to the present day. Topics include the court art of Louis XIV, the influence of trade with the East, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Deco and Modernism. The course concludes with an exploration of the plurality of approaches, including Pop, Postmodernism and conceptual design.

Lectures are reinforced by visits to museums, houses, dealers and previews of sales at Sotheby’s. A study tour to Paris is normally offered. The course equips students with knowledge and skills appropriate to a wide range of careers in the art and interior design worlds.

We are delighted to announce that Semester courses are now validated as Continuing Professional Development by the University of Manchester.
