Contemporary Art, Singapore

The Master of Arts Degree in Contemporary Art programme offered at Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Singapore is distinctive in its focus on contemporary Asian art.

In addition to learning about the development of contemporary art in Europe and North America, a major lecture module is ‘Contemporary Art in Asia’ during the first Semester, when students learn about the development of contemporary art in various parts of Asia, including East Asia (China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan), South Asia (India and Pakistan), Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines), Central Asia and Australia.

In the second Semester, the ‘Postcolonialism and Globalisation’ module allows students to study how Asian art came to be an integral part of the international art scene, where it is now regularly exhibited alongside European and American art at international exhibitions and biennales.

In addition to learning about Asian art through lectures and seminars, students get first-hand experience of art centres in Asia through study visits to China (Beijing and Shanghai) and Indonesia (Yogyakarta, Jakarta and Bandung) as part of the programme. In addition to these two study trips in Asia, students also spend a week in New York where, among other things, they learn about how Asian art is perceived and presented in a western art centre like New York.
