Summer Study: Photography: Art, History and the Market

Throughout the past 170 years, from the first pioneering experiments carried out by Talbot and Daguerre, photography has continued to inspire, excite and move.

This course traces the history of the medium, as well as its evolving technologies, practices and markets into the digital age. Exploring the careers of popular photographers, such as Julia Margaret Cameron and Stieglitz, the course will also highlight some of the key debates surrounding photography and its status as an art form in its own right. These issues will be examined through a varied programme of lectures, seminars and behind-the-scenes visits to leading collections, including the Print Room at the V&A and the Cecil Beaton archive at Sotheby’s.
